Walter Hagen

American

21st December 1892

New York, USA

Relaxed sportsman, serious showman but above all else Walter Hagen was
a tremendous matchplayer and a great golfer with unstoppable ambition.

His attitude to life was tension free always taking the time to sample the good things in life.

The golf swing which took him to the top of his profession was a reflection of this attitude.
Using an extremely light grip, keeping his head still, he would make a full swing with his arms.
Wanting nothing more than distance, to play the ball as he found it, chin up and smiling,
accepting whatever luck came or did not come his way without rancour.

It brought him eleven Major Tournaments, a place in the Ryder Cup and
a well deserved place in the USPGA and the World Cup Hall of Fame.

This was not, however, his only gift to the game of golf.
Believed by many to be the man who made professional golf what it is today,
for his assertive spirit laughed at the kind of
British snobbery that looked down on the professional golfers.

He believed that this snobbery had no place in the game - His outstanding record confirmed their mistake.

The poor boy from Rochester became a respected and popular, debonair millionaire who brought
skill, style and flamboyance to the game of golf.
