Staged by the United States Golf Association
and played every year in June
on various golf courses throughout America.
The U.S. Open is one of four major championships
in men's golf. and is on the the European Tour
and PGA Tour schedule.

Started by the USGA in 1895 and played at Newport, Rhode Island on a single day, October 4th.

Only ten professionals and one amateur player entered the competition
which was played over thirty six holes on a nine-hole course.

This first U.S. Open was won by Horace Rawlins an Englishman who took the
Open Championship Cup for his club and a gold medal for himself.

This was to set a pattern of British winners until it was eventually won in 1911 by John J. McDermott, a native born American.

From that point on it quickly became one of the four major tournaments in golf and america's most important golf event.

Spectator tickets where introduced in 1922 and in 1924 qualifying rounds
had to be established as players flocked to enter the tournament.

The U.S. Open, with no lower age restriction, is open to any professional,
or amateur with an up-to-date USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 1.4.

Players may obtain a place by being fully exempt or by competing successfully
in qualifying rounds held in America , Europe and Japan.
