Since turning professional in 1977, at which point the English born Lyle adopted his fathers Scottish nationality,
his career has had its fair share of ups and downs.
Son of a respected teaching professional, Sandy Lyle,
has earned his place alongside the best golfers the game has to offer.
One of Scotland's best players Sandy, who at three years old could hit a ball 80 yards,
became Junior Champion at the age of fourteen and England Amateur Stroke Champion at seventeen.
Progression to the Walker Cup and Ryder Cup teams and to that of golf professional swiftly followed.
Standing 6' 1" and being powerfully built he is a great iron player - albeit one with a suspect swing -
but his dependence on natural talent leaves him with no method to rely on when things go wrong.
However, although he is by no means a consistent player,
Sandy Lyle has managed to control his game when it matters.
His record of achievements is proof enough !
