Son of the greenkeeper at Real Golf Club de San Sebastian he developed a
passion and determination for the game he had learned to play there.
This determination brought him a string of amateur successes by the tender age of eighteen.

Appearing in the Ryder Cup in 1987 he played his part in making an historic contribution
to the golfing archives when an 'away victory' over the USA was recorded.
During his Ryder Cup encounters he joined forces with Seve Ballesteros to produce
a partnership which proved to be valuable to the Europeans as they
won eleven , halved two and lost just two of their fifteen matches.

It seems that theirs was a partnership based on 'opposites attract' as his
calm and controlled game coupled with the passionate play of Seve Ballesteros
to produce a formidable partnership, possibly the best ever seen in the Ryder Cup.
1990 saw him 'take America by storm' as the winner of the World Series of Golf with a record twelve strokes
