Ben Hogan a man of strength, dedication and enormous courage.
A man who steadfastly refused to give in, a man who believed in himself even though all the odds where against him.
A career that took off slowly his first success as a professional golfer taking seven years to come.
Then from 1940 onwards he was to dominate the money list in the United States.
With the end of the Second World War came his first Major win in 1946 at Portland where he took the USPGA Championship.
By the age of thirty six Hogan was without question the best golfer in the world.
1948 saw him win the US Open , the USPGA Championship and the Western Open.
At the top of his chosen profession, in a game that he loved,
revered by his fellow competitors Ben Hogan had it all in his hands.
This, however, was not to last for on Wednesday 2nd February tragedy struck.
A road accident left him with horrendous injuries from which no one expected him
to recover and resume his place in golfing history.
Recover he did - through sheer courage and determination he slowly, painfully learned to walk again
and gradually he built up his shattered body.
By 1950 he proved to everyone that he was back by winning the US Open.
From there on he went from one success to another -
even winning the British Open Championship in 1953 despite the fact that he hated overseas travel
and thought that the host Golf Club, Carnoustie was like playing on the moon.
His drive for perfection made him unpopular with some but Ben Hogan has won the reverence of golfers worldwide.
He is an inspiration to all those who are injured or physically disabled, to play,
or return to a game that inspires his kind of courage.
The Ben Hogan Award - a bronze sculpture is given each year to one such golfer.
