The Nicklaus Course
Officially opened in the July of 1988, the Nicklaus golf course at St Mellion in
Cornwall is regarded as one of the finest golf courses in Europe. Jack Nicklaus
has
designed many golf courses, however St Mellion’s Nicklaus Course in Cornwall was
the first golf course he designed in the UK. Jack’s signature is all over this incredible
course – high tees with good views of the fairways, water hazards and the requirement
to place the ball in the right position in order to score well. Once opened Nicklaus
gave the course his highest compliment:
“I knew it was going to be good, but not this good – its everything I had
hoped for
and more… St Mellion is potentially the finest golf course in Europe”.
At just over 7,000 yards from the tournament tees and 6,000 yards from the medal
tees, the Nicklaus Course provides a truly outstanding test of golf for
people of
all abilities. Each hole from the 1st to the 18th provides its own unique test, with
character and beauty, as a golfer whilst enjoying a round on the
Nicklaus Course
there really would not be a place you would rather be playing!
The Old Course
The “Old Course” at St Mellion is a championship golf course in its own right.
It
was opened in 1976 and at 6,000 yards, has many holes which will test the very best
golfer. The long par 4 third will require 2 accurate shots to reach the green in
regulation where bunkers are ideally placed to catch both your tee shot and approach.
The twelfth is the most picturesque of the par three’s with the lake being quite
intimidating to the nervous player – however, to hit the green is most satisfying.
The Old Course finishes with the fantastic par 4 eighteenth which provides a fitting
end to a memorable 18 holes.
The Old Course is a delightful course with wonderful
scenery, and extremely popular with both members and visitors of all handicaps a
like.
